So who around ANWA knows a foreign language? What were your motivations for learning the language? Some of you may have learnt in school, from parents, through a tutor, or taught yourself The current foreign languages that I am learning is - German (2 years), Russian (1 year 3 months), French (5 months), Chinese Mandarin (Just started), and Scottish Gaelic (Just started). I'm self-taught in all of them (except Mandarin, which will be a part of my Uni course this year), and do language exchange on skype for practice. For me the hobby began with me starting to learn German, as my grandad is a native German speaker (Austrian), and I wanted to speak to him in his native language, not English. This first goal is one I have since accomplished. Since then, my goals have developed to wanting to get a career that involves the use of foreign languages in some form. Do any of you speak a language other than English at home? cheers dad2

Well I learnt a little French when I was at school but I got kicked out of that class. And then they (my teachers) put me into a 2nd English class instead. I tell you folks it doesn't pay to sware in other languages at your teachers.

Well although I'm not fluent (I can actually barely speak it to be honest), my family speak a lot of Italian at home, especially when we have relatives over.
I can understand certain words and figure out what is being said, but for the most part I find it very difficult to understand and learn. I am going to try and learn over the next few years in my own spare time, but with Uni coming up it's very unlikely that it will happen.

My Boss is Italian SC(+)PE, I have no idea whether he is asking me to do something or swearing at me some day's. At least the work order sheets come in English on the fax so I can get everything done at least.

I learnt Japanese in school but didn't get into it ( I was forced to learn jap or Indonesian ) but I learnt Chinese ( manderin) through both a tutor and long distance I kinda got pushed into it by my family as China is a big part of my family's business ( they visit like 10 times a year ) but stopped doing it I didn't have the attention span to do long distance

That's awesome to here that some of you can speak other languages your all doing far better than me. I sometimes wish I could speak more languages other than just being able to swear in French. Hence why I actually have no interest in going on an overseas holiday really.
